Researchers have conducted a study on which dogs were fed canned food to calculate the effect of chemicals on their health.
Scientists have been warning us against the dangers of canned food on our dogs’ health. They have noticed the risks of Bisphenol A (BPA) on their health. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical that has always caused many health problems for humans like reproductive problems.
Unfortunately, BPA is found consumer products including canned goods, water bottles, and receipts. So scientists conducted a study to prove that BPA can be dangerous to dogs as it is for humans.
The scientists have published their study in the journal Science of the Total Environment. The study included 14 dogs that used to eat stored food in bags. The researchers started feeding them canned food. Some of these canned foods were labeled as BPA-free.
These dogs were presented with canned food for just two weeks after which their blood levels of BPA increased. Researchers have compared between their BPA levels before and after the study. These dogs’ levels of BPA nearly tripled compared to their concentrations before the study.
Scientists have also found other changes associated with the rise of BPA levels in their blood. There have been changes in gut microbiome and metabolism in the 14 dogs.
The study authors have also gone beyond the direct results of the study. The study findings have proven to them that these health threats to our pets have indirect causes related to us, humans.
When dogs share the same internal and external environments with us, they are affected by the same dangers we might face. Moreover, they can be regarded as indicators of possible human health issues caused by BPA or other chemicals.
